Market Overview

The domestic space designing market in FY2023 was estimated at 1.6 trillion yen, up by 16.8% from the previous fiscal year (based on the sales of businesses). The industry encompasses businesses that plan and design spaces and environments for event/exhibition and for interiors of commercial facilities.

Demand for space design services for events and exhibitions has been on the rise since 2022, supported by the return of in-person events following the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions. In the interior design sector, growth was similarly driven by the resumption of construction projects that had been postponed or canceled during the pandemic. Additionally, hotels and international apparel brands actively pursued new store openings and renovations to enhance brand value and attract customers in anticipation of post-pandemic foot traffic.  Office renovation demand also remained strong, as companies focused on creating more comfortable and productive work environments to boost employee morale and performance.

Noteworthy Topics

Service Line Extension in Progress

Entering new markets and launching new services are seen in the space design industry, particularly among large companies. The new markets refer to projects related to offices and sports entertainment. The new service variations include tenant leasing (attracting tenants for commercial facilities they have designed), consulting (drawing up a concept or business operation plan based on surveys and analysis of client’s needs and challenges), marketing (supporting event announcement and online events), and real estate (revitalization of small and mid-size buildings in the metropolitan areas).

There are several factors driving business expansion. Over the long term, a declining population is expected to lead to a reduction in buildings and facilities. In the short term, exhibitions and events remain sensitive to economic conditions. At the same time, client demands for event and exhibition design and staging are becoming increasingly complex and diverse. Against the backdrop of a nationwide labor shortage, developing new business areas to enhance the value of offerings is essential for sustaining growth with limited resources.

Future Outlook

The market size of domestic space designing market in FY2024 is projected to grow by 11.9% from the preceding fiscal year to 1.79 trillion yen (based on the sales of businesses). Growth is being fueled by strong demand for construction and renovation at hotels, large-scale commercial facilities, and office buildings, driven by rising inbound tourism and ongoing urban revitalization efforts. The space design industry, particularly among large firms, has also benefited from increased demand related to EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Kansai.
