Perovskite solar cells and components

Research Target:

Manufacturers and research institutes participating in the perovskite solar cell and components market in Japan, as well as manufacturers of barrier films, transparent conductive films, and other materials

Research Content:

Perovskite solar cells are attracting attention because they are thin, lightweight, flexible, can be installed in any location, and have high efficiency. In Japan, there are not only solar cell manufacturers, but also numerous material and component manufacturers that produce reagents, which are raw materials for perovskite layers and charge transport layers, as well as base materials (glass and film), barrier films, transparent conductive films, and cover films that make up the modules. The government is promoting measures to industrialize the technology as a domestically produced next-generation renewable energy source as soon as possible.
In response to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry's initiative to “establish a GW-class mass production system as early as possible by 2030,” module manufacturers are advancing development aimed at improving power generation efficiency and have announced the start of capital investment and test marketing with a view to mass production between 2025 and 2026. On the other hand, durability, cost, and securing converter capacity in the film type are pressing issues, and some component manufacturers say, “There is a limit to how much we can solve these issues with the current equipment and technology.”
In this project, we interviewed module manufacturers and research institutes participating in the perovskite solar cell market in Japan, as well as manufacturers of barrier films, transparent conductive films, and other materials, to analyze and discuss market trends, technology trends, and the trends of participating companies and research institutes. The report analyzes the market environment and outlook for perovskite solar cells and their components.

TOC:

I   Prospects and Strategies in Perovskite Solar Cell/Components Market

  • Will it be around 2040 for Securing GW-class power generation?
  • Japan has potential victory by taking "strategy not to contend" with existing solar cells or with manufacturers overseas.
  • Expectation arises to Perovskite Solar Cell (PSC) as a high-efficient next-generation solar cell from Japan
  • Capital investment is underway in each company, foreseeing demonstration, test marketing and mass production.
  • Power generation by PSC is forecast to reach 240MW in 2035 and 1.5GW in 2040
  • Hasty Expansion can lead to a price war, the failure that Japan has experienced in crystalline silicon solar cells.
  • Japan's converting techniques that enable handling of load limitation, uneven/curved surfaces, perpendicular surfaces, and small-lot, multi-variety products are distinct from other countries, which can realize high added-value, Japan-original PSCs.
  • Cost and capacity of current film components are bottlenecks in securing GW-class power generation
  • Promote government-led stimulus measures and public-private partnerships to create a spiral of demand growth!
