Conventionally, hydrogen has been used mostly in industrial sectors, such as in petroleum refining, oil hardening, and furnace atmosphere heat treating. However, the fact that it emits no CO2 when combusted has accelerated the utilization of hydrogen as energy source in 2020s, inside and outside of Japan.
The frontrunner in the utilization of hydrogen energy has been the products using fuel cell, such as stationary fuel cells and fuel cell vehicles. The range of products have expanded to commercial vehicles and cargo handling equipment (forklifts, transtainers, etc.).
On the other hand, the development of combustion burners and heaters are also underway. The hydrogen combustion technology is expected to accelerate the achievement of carbon neutrality in hard-to-decarbonize industries like manufacturing factories and large-scale power plants that require large amount of heat at high-temperature.
