Market Overview

The domestic hair salon and barbershop market, based on company sales, was estimated at 2,124.0 billion yen in FY2024, 101.5% of the size in the previous fiscal year.
Similar to FY2023, the market showed reassured recovery to normal levels after the pandemic in FY2024.
Many large companies and leading companies increased their sales performance. This was primarily due to price revisions for hair salon and barbershop services. Although price revisions were thought to affect customer numbers or frequency, the results did not worsen significantly from the status prior to the price revisions, though the situations differ by salon.

In the context of continued commodity price increases, customers of hair salons and barbershops seem to accept price revisions. However, low- and middle-income households tend to prioritize "daily life defense". Therefore, consumers may either accept or reject spending at hair salons or barbershops.

Noteworthy Topics

Status of Specialty Hair Coloring Salons

In recent years, the number of specialty hair coloring salons offering stylish hair coloring and gray hair dyeing services has grown steadily. However, the rate at which new salons are opening seems to have slowed.
The number of these salons is expected to continue increasing for the time being, because some companies still view opening new salons in areas with few salons as an opportunity for business expansion. On the other hand, securing manpower is a crucial challenge, causing some new salons to delay opening in areas with few salons.

Future Outlook

The domestic hair salon and barbershop market is forecast to reach 2,126.0 billion yen in FY2025, which is 100.1% of the size in the previous fiscal year. Of the market size, the barbershop market is expected to be 595.3 billion yen, a 0.1% increase from the previous year, and the hair salon market to be 1,530.7 billion yen, also a 0.1% increase from the previous year.

By FY2025 when the overall impact of price revisions has settled, the ability to attract customers and increase customer spending among companies and salons is likely to become apparent. However, if material and transportation costs increase and the cost of securing manpower continues to grow, salons may need to raise their prices once again. Although consumers are relatively generous to accept price adjustments, they may choose to reduce the frequency or look for less expensive salons if businesses repeatedly revise prices.
