Summary of Research Findings

This questionnaire has been mailed to medical equipment centers at hospitals and medical institutions nationwide, the scale from small to large, having any operating rooms in the period from May to June 2023, and responded back by 361 institutions.

Of 361 institutions responded, 37 facilities (10%) have 10 or more operating rooms, 57 institutions (15.8%) have 6 to 9, and 267 (74.0%) have 5 or less operating rooms.
There are 16 institutions (4.4%) with dedicated endoscopy operating rooms, 48 (13.3%) with hybrid operating rooms that combine a traditional operating room with cardiac and cerebral angiography equipment, and 31 facilities (8.6%) with robotic operating rooms equipped with a surgical support robot.

Annual Number of Surgical Operations by Medial Department on Average

When asked in the questionnaire on the annal number of surgical operations (including endoscopic surgery, operations involving surgical support robots, etc.) for FY2022, 9 institutions (2.5%) had more than 7,000 cases of surgical operations per year, 19 facilities (5.3%) had 5,001 to 7,000 cases, 33 institutions (9.1%) had 3,001 to 5,000 cases, and 300 (83.1%) had 3,000 or less cases of operations.
In the research, annual numbers of surgical operations by medical department on average was calculated based on the responses on the percentage of surgical operations by medical department. It is found out that the highest number of surgical operations performed was by orthopedics at 468.2 cases, followed by gastroenterology at 348.7 cases, gynecology at 316.7, and urology at 310.4 cases. The lowest number of operations was conducted by thoracic surgery at 158.0 cases, followed by neurosurgery at 166.3 cases, and cardiovascular surgery at 217.8 cases.
