Consumer Survey on Aesthetic Medicine in Japan: Key Research Findings 2023

Consumer Survey Revealed Top 3 Reasons NOT to get Aesthetic Medicine Treatments Are “Cost,” “Safety,” and “Fear”

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a consumer survey on aesthetic medicine and analyzed the demand for aesthetic medicine by women in their 20s to 50s. This press release discloses a part of the survey results.


Summary of Research Findings

According to the questionnaire to a total of 400 women in their 20s to 50s nationwide, the top 3 facial aesthetic concerns or desires for improvement were “dark spots/birthmarks/moles”, “wrinkles/saggy skin” and “acne/acne scars”, in a descending order. The top 3 body aesthetic problems were, “unwanted hair”, “legs (excess fat, cellulite)”, and “waist (excess fat, cellulite)”.

Among 200 women who had undergone some aesthetic treatments, “price transparency”, “location”, and “low price” accounted for the top three reasons for selecting a clinic. Viewing by treatment category, the top 3 facial treatments among the same group of women were “removal of dark spots/birthmarks/moles”, “double eyelid surgery (buried suture method)”, and “skin beautification/rejuvenation (chemical peeling)”, and the top 3 body treatments were “hair removal”, “body slimming (excluding liposuction)”, and “skin beautification (rejuvenation)”.

Determinants and Needs for Treatments among Women Interested in Medical Aesthetics

The result of the questionnaire found out that, among 200 women interested in aesthetic medicine but never underwent a treatment, the top 3 reasons for refraining from getting medical aesthetic treatments were “cost”, “safety concerns”, and “fear”. Meanwhile, they also said that if they were to choose a clinic, the top 3 factors influencing their decisions would be “price transparency”, “physician good-mannered during the first consultation”, and “highly skilled/many cases of treatment”.

The evaluation for each treatment category by those interested in aesthetic medicine but never experienced the treatment showed that many were willing to undergo the following 7 categories if they were more affordable and safety-assured: “skin tightening/facelift”, “skin tightening injections”, “removal of dark spots/birthmarks/moles”, “facial skin beautification/rejuvenation”, “body slimming/partial body slimming (excluding liposuction)”, “body skin beautification/rejuvenation”, and “hair removal”. The survey discovered that many respondents would willingly go for aesthetic medicine even not experienced before, if all conditions met, such as price improvement and safety assured.
