Clinical Laboratory Testing Service Market in Japan: Research Findings 2020
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a survey on the domestic clinical laboratory testing service market for FY2019 and found out the trends at market players, and future perspectives.
Considering the financial performances at leading laboratory testing centers and operating statuses at small and middle-size centers, the domestic clinical laboratory testing service market for FY2019 (based on sales revenues at service providers) was estimated as 576 billion yen, an increase by 1.9% from the previous fiscal year.
The market for FY2019 was boosted by the inspections of cancer genome as well as anti-rubella antibodies, etc. Nevertheless, visit to general medical institutions was avoided by large number of people by March i.e. the end of the fiscal year, due to expansion of new coronavirus infections. Therefore, negative growth was seen for that single month, but the influence to the annual-base market size was subtle.
COVID-19 Pandemics Likely to Cause Negative Growth for Clinical Laboratory Testing Service Market
The clinical laboratory testing service market for FY2020 is significantly affected by COVID-19 pandemics, as the number of specimen for inspection declined by more than 10% during the period between April and May when compared with the same period of the previous year, which seems that scale down by 10% of market size for the whole year is unavoidable.
Although demand for PCR testing and high-precision antibody tests for new coronaviruses has increased at some medical institutions, it seems to be unable to cover the loss caused by avoidance of taking medical check-ups and of visiting general hospitals.
FY2020 is positioned as a unique year for the clinical laboratory testing service market that has gone through new coronavirus pandemics. The market can expect a rising tendency in FY2021 and beyond, depending on when the COVID-19 infections end.
A basic trend for market perspectives shows that the market growth is supported by stable increase of antibody testing at medical institutions as well as at medical check-up sites, inspections for each inflectional disease, and human gene inspections that associate with progress of personalized medicine. When considering the domestic demographic movement and the influence of suppressed medical fees, however, the market is projected to be fully matured in the mid-to-long term perspectives.
