In addition to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Chinese smartphone makers, Apple Inc. has started using AMOLED displays for its smartphones, which expanded the global shipment volume of AMOLED displays. Other than smartphones, AMOLED displays have begun being embedded to smartwatches, tablet PCs, TVs, and etc., enlarging the global AMOLED display market (based on the shipment volume at manufacturers) to achieve a double digit growth, 113.8% of the size of the previous year to reach 505,755 thousand in 2018.
Trend of AMOLED Displays Applied to Smartphones
The global shipment volume of AMOLED displays in 2019 is expect to attain another double-digit growth, just like in 2018, as the displays have widened its application range not only to rigid OLED displays for mid-end smartphones but also to flexible OLED displays.
Recently, in addition to enhancement of the camera functions, how good the smartphone looks in designs has become important in developing smartphone terminals. The recent trends of each smartphone maker are the bezel-less or full-screen designs as well as new development of foldable smartphones which increased the demand for flexible OLED panels because they enable the smartphones to bend.
The demand of AMOLED displays for smartphones is projected to rise, as they are increasingly used for flexible OLED displays in bezel-less or full-screen terminals and for foldable smartphones, in addition to rigid OLED displays for mid-end smartphones. Display makers including Samsung Display Co., Ltd., LG Display Co., Ltd., and BOE Technology Group have determined to fully produce flexible OLED displays since 2019.
Furthermore, the demand of AMOLED displays for OLED-TVs has expanded, in addition to LG Display Co., Ltd having augmented the abilities of the displays, while Samsung Display Co., Ltd trying to enter the market of large AMOLED displays and continue developing QD-OLED for TVs.
Led by the increasing number of AMOLED displays embedded, and progressive market entry by the makers, the global AMOLED display market (based on the shipment volume at manufacturers) is likely to continue expanding to reach 867,650 thousand by 2023.
