Transition and Forecast of Medical Engineering Instruments (Diagnostics Devices) Market Size

Market Overview

This research targets 32 items (38 products/57 categories) of diagnostic instruments out of all medical engineering equipment used at hospitals, clinics, medical centers, etc. The market in FY2019 saw positive growth especially in image diagnostic apparatuses due to last minute surge in demand just before the tax hike, but the market condition in FY2020 has continued being stern due to COVID-19 pandemics except for special demand for some items.

The market size of medical engineering instruments (diagnostics devices) in FY2019 was estimated as 341,464 million yen, a rise by 5.0% on a Y-o-Y basis, due to last-minute surge in demand just before the consumption tax hike, which stably sold high-end items such as image diagnostic apparatuses and biological information monitors.

Noteworthy Topics

Market Trend of X-Ray CT Scanners

X-ray CT (computed tomography) scanners have exceeded 50 billion yen in FY2012 but have been on the decline since FY2013. In FY2019, however, the sales volume of the scanners rose by 52 to attain 1,166 units, as the demand surged just before the consumption tax hike in the first half of FY2019, despite downturn occurred in the second half of the fiscal year after the upsurge. The sales value attained 36,220 million yen, proportionate to the sales volume of high-end X-ray CT scanners that can generate 64 tomographic slices.

For FY2020, the global expansion of COVID-19 infections affected the hospital operations, which is likely for the sales of X-ray CT scanners in FY2020 to decline by 94 units to 1,072 in volume and 33,340 million yen in value.

Future Outlook

For FY2020, when the COVID-19 infections expanded, the distributors of medical engineering instruments had to refrain from visiting hospitals from April to June in 2020 in order to prevent in-hospital infections. On the other hand, hospitals have been suffering from serious financial deterioration, forcing them to suspend or postpone the budget implementation, and to refrain from updating of devices. Although some products are increasing the demand in the COVID-19 calamity most of the products are likely to go through negative growth.

Considering the situation, the market size of medical engineering instruments (diagnostics devices) for FY2020 is forecasted to decline by 5.7% to end up with 321,866 million yen.
