Generic Disposable Medical Supplies Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2026

Generic Disposable Medical Supplies Market Reached 261.4324 Billion Yen in FY2024, Marking a 2.2% Year-Over-Year Increase

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) conducted a survey of the domestic market for generic disposable medical supplies. The survey revealed the trend by segment, trends among market players, and the market outlook.

Market Overview

In FY2024, three segments experienced growth rates of over 5%: winged IV needles, where manufacturers continued to raise prices; syringes; and empty bags for high-calorie infusion.

Based on sales from domestic manufacturers and imported product distributors, the disposable medical supplies market (excluding adult diapers) was estimated at 261.4324 billion yen in FY2024, which was a 2.2% increase from the previous fiscal year.

Noteworthy Topics

The Home-Use Market for Disposable Medical Supplies

Currently, home care patients are primarily those who are billed for “at-home self-injection guidance and management fees” and “home continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) guidance and management fees.” Due to the expected exponential growth of the elderly population, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) is reevaluating the provision of terminal and end-of-life care. The MHLW is encouraging a shift from hospital care to home care to ensure long-term care provisions for the elderly.

The home-use segment of the disposable medical supplies market grew 1.8% year over year, reaching 26.6991 billion yen in FY2024.

Products with robust growth potential in this segment include urology products such as self-catheterization catheters, transfusion filters, indwelling needles for dialysis, and home artificial respiratory therapy products such as respiratory circuits and artificial noses. Adult diapers are experiencing continuous growth due to the large number of potential urinary incontinence patients.

Future Outlook

Disposable medical supplies that are highly likely to increase in implementation and usage include products equipped with safety mechanisms to prevent infection, suction devices such as drainage treatment systems, respiratory and anesthetic circuits with disposability potential, oxygen masks and nasal cannulas, and kits and sets of products that increase work efficiency for medical staff, including back-office workers.

Due to medical facilities’ eagerness to prevent infections, the implementation of products equipped with safety mechanisms is likely to continue.

Devices for drug infusion, transfusion lines, and those used for surgical operations are included. Needles (injection and winged needles), transfusion sets, medical filters, nutrition infusion systems (including three-way stopcocks and connecting tubes), as well as masks, circuits, and ECG electrodes used for respiratory and anesthesia apparatuses are also included. However, those single-use catheters and tubes are not included in this market.
