Consumer Survey to Men on Aesthetic Medicine in Japan: Key Research Findings 2023

“Costly” “Safety Concerns” and “Potential for Causing Problems” Came at Upper Ranks by 200 Male Respondents for Reasons of Not Using Aesthetic Medicine, Though Interested

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a consumer survey on aesthetic medicine to men in their 20s to 50s and analyzed the demand for aesthetic medicine and other related matters. Here discloses a part of the survey results (all questions allowed multiple responses.)

Summary of Research Findings

In the consumer survey to 400 men in their 20s to 50s nationwide about the facial parts concerned or that want to be improved, “removal of age spot, nevus, or mole” came at the top, followed by “removal of beards and mustaches” at the second, and “removal of acne and acne scars” at the third. For the body parts concerned or that want to be improved, the largest number of responses obtained was “depilation”, followed by “none in particular” at the second, and “liposuction” at the third.

Of 400 respondents, the largest number of reasons for choosing the clinic obtained from 200 men who have experienced aesthetic medicine was “good location” at the top, “clear pricing system” at the second, and “low price” at the third. The facial treatment that those respondents experienced most was “removal of beards and mustaches” at the top, “removal of age spot, nevus, or mole” at the second, and “removal of acne and acne scars” at the third. For the body treatment, the most popular response by those who had experienced aesthetic medicine was “none in particular” at the top, “depilation” at the second, and “liposuction” at the third.

Conditions for Men Interested in Aesthetic Medicine to Receive Treatment and Treatment Needs

As a result of the consumer survey, the top three reasons for 200 men for not using aesthetic medicine though interested were “costly”, “safety concerns”, and “problematic.”
If using aesthetic medicine, the criteria to select the clinic would be “clear pricing system” at the top, “seemingly highly skilled/a large number of cases to accept patients” at the second, and “good location” and “low price” both earned the same number of responses at the third.

The following six types of treatment, i.e., “removal of facial age spot, nevus, or mole”, “removal of beards and mustaches”, “body depilation”, “removal of facial acne and acne scars”, “face lift/facial skin firming”, and “beautifying facial skin” earned less than 50% of responses for “not wanting to go through the treatment” from men who had interested in aesthetic medicine but had no experience of it. This indicated that these six types of treatment had high potential of attracting customers/patients, though conditional.
