Questionnaire to 111 Medical Aesthetic Clinics Nationwide Revealed “Skin Brightening” and “Women’s Hair Removal” as Most Popular Treatments

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has mailed a questionnaire to hospitals and clinics that provides medical aesthetic treatments and has found out the number of treatment cases, patients, and staffs, as well as their current installation status of medical aesthetic treatment equipment and supplier evaluation. This press release announces the annual average of the number of procedures performed by treatment type.

Summary of Research Findings

For this research, a mailed questionnaire to hospitals and clinics across Japan that call themselves either dermatologist, aesthetic dermatologist, or aesthetic surgeon, was conducted. A total of 111 facilities responded.

When asked about the total number of procedures performed per year, the most common response was "1,000 to less than 5,000" (38 facilities, 34.2% of the total), followed by "less than 500" (20 facilities, 18.0%) and "500 to 1,000" (19 facilities, 17.1%). Facilities with less than 5,000 treatments per year accounted for approximately 70% of the total. On the other hand, there were multiple respondents that said they perform more than 30,000 procedures per year.

“Skin Brightening” is The Most Popular Treatment – An Average of 875 Procedures Performed Per Year

The most popular cosmetic procedure performed in medical facilities targeted in this research are “skin rejuvenation” and “skin brightening”, with more than 80 percent of all surveyed facilities. Subsequently, “women’s hair removal”, “men’s hair removal”, “treatment of axillary osmidrosis and hyperhidrosis”, “double eye-lid surgery, eye filler works”, “nose job, facelift” are performed in more than half of the facilities.

In view of the average of the number of procedures performed by treatment type, “skin brightening” and “women’s hair removal” accounted for the most, with 875.0 cases and 705.5 cases, respectively. These are followed by “skin rejuvenation” (406.0 cases) and “men’s hair removal” (208.6 cases). Meanwhile, the results indicated that “cosmetic gynecology surgery”, “hair removal for the underaged”, and “breast augmentation” are performed considerably less, with the average of 13.5 cases, 12.3 cases, and 10.2 cases, respectively.

At the target medical facilities, various types of medical treatments are conducted by physicians using all kinds of medical treatment equipment (such as CO2 laser, pulsed dye Laser, ruby laser, Pico laser, Q-switched Nd: YAG laser, Alexandrite Q-Switched laser, medical hair removal laser, slimming machines, ultraviolet light therapy, intense pulsed light devices [IPL], radiofrequency devices [RF], etc.).
