Lighting Fixture Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2026
The Lighting Fixture Market Reached 1.091 Trillion Yen in 2025, A 3.8% Increase From Previous Year
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the lighting fixture market in Japan. The survey revealed the overview of general purpose lighting fixture market, the trends of market players, and future outlook.
Market Overview
The lighting fixture market, which includes fixtures and lamps using conventional and LED light sources, is estimated to be worth 1.091025 trillion yen in 2025, which is a 3.8% increase from the previous year.
According to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (*1), the production, import, and export of fluorescent lights will be banned by the end of 2027. The increased awareness of the “2027 fluorescent light issue” among facility managers has led to higher demand for LED replacements in the market for lighting fixtures using conventional light sources. This is the main reason for the growth of the overall lighting fixture market.
The replacement of conventional light sources with LEDs is likely to continue in this market, driving its expansion through 2030.

Progress in the Development of High-Value Added Products
Lighting manufacturers have been releasing high-value added products one after another.
Due to labor shortages in nonresidential settings, there is high demand for products that are easy to install. Wireless lighting control systems are drawing attention because they simplify wiring and reduce the installation labor.
In recent years, lighting fixtures have been sold not only as standalone products but also as part of a coordinated approach to the overall illuminated space, taking into account the space’s comfort, labor-saving aspects, and design.
However, costs are hindering the widespread adoption of these high-added value products. Full-scale market penetration of these products seems to take more time.
Future Outlook
The lighting fixture market is expected to reach 1.14 trillion yen in 2026, marking a 4.5% increase from the previous year. Demand for LED replacements for existing fluorescent lights in Japan is being fueled by the Minamata Convention on Mercury, an international treaty. This trend is expected to strengthen through the end of 2027.
Based on the current replacement pace, a certain percentage of existing facilities are likely to maintain their unreplaced lighting fixtures even after the fluorescent lights are restricted. Therefore, demand for LED replacements is expected to continue through 2030.
The market is forecast to reach 1.328 trillion yen by 2030, which is a 21.7% increase from 2025. Despite concerns about a decrease in new housing starts (*2) in the medium- to long-term perspective, market growth is ensured by rising lighting fixture prices due to their advanced features and continuing demand for LED replacements in secondary and existing buildings and residences. Consequently, the market is expected to continue growing through 2030.

What is the Lighting Fixture Market?
For the purposes of this research, the lighting fixture market refers to fixtures, equipment, and lamps that use conventional light sources for general illumination, including incandescent and fluorescent lights, high-pressure discharge lamps, and LEDs. These fixtures are used in buildings, on streets, and on roads. However, lighting embedded in machinery and devices for automobiles and industrial use is excluded.
This research categorizes the lighting fixture market into four segments: 1) lighting fixtures using conventional light sources, 2) lamps using conventional light sources, 3) LED lighting fixtures, and 4) LED lamps. Market size is calculated based on the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s (METI) “Current Survey of Production” and the Ministry of Finance’s “Trade Statistics of Japan.”
