POCT Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2024
POCT Market for FY2023 Dropped to 273,900 Million Yen, 82.1% of Previous Fiscal Year
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has carried out a survey on the domestic point-of-care testing (POCT) market and has found out the market size, the trend of market players, and future perspectives.

Market Overview
The domestic point-of-care testing (POCT) market size (total 10 major categories) declined to 273,900 million yen, 82.1% of the size of the previous fiscal year.
From FY2021 to FY2022, the market for rapid antigen test kits for COVID-19 that use immunochromatography expanded rapidly. The growth was witnessed particularly in FY2022 as municipalities waged to secure a significant volume of test kits. Nevertheless, the sales turned to worse from May 2023, as the government reclassified Covid-19 to class 5 disease under the Infectious Disease Act, which diminished the demand for Covid test kits at non-medical facilities.
Still, the POCT market size has become more than double its size before the pandemic (which was a little over 100 billion yen). The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly created a huge demand for rapid testing kits for sure.
Noteworthy Topics
Emerging Demand for COVID-19/Flu Combo Rapid Test Kits
From FY2020 to FY2022, Covid-19 was by far the most widespread respiratory infection, with only a few exceptions. However, the infectious disease landscape shifted in FY2023, marked by a summer outbreak of influenza. In fact, there was a simultaneous outbreak of Covid-19 and influenza, putting significant strain on medical facilities as they managed an influx of patients.
As a result, the market for immunochromatographic clinical test kits saw a sharp increase in demand for Covid-Flu combo rapid antigen test kits in FY2023, which can detect the new coronavirus and influenza virus at once.
Future Outlook
Although the government already classified Covid as a category 5 infectious disease, it is maintaining dual seasonality, peaking twice a year. As medical professionals are still warned of another outbreak, the needs for Covid-19 rapid antigen test kits are projected to remain high.
In addition, against the backdrop of the increase in the number of patients with infectious diseases other than novel coronavirus, such as influenza, streptococci, adenovirus, RS virus, and mycoplasma pneumonia, the needs for rapid tests in the early stage of these infection are on the rise. Going forward, we believe that the opportunities will grow for manufacturers to expand their offerings to include highly-sensitive rapid test kits to identify a range of viral infections, as well as for multiple infections.

About POCT Market
POCT (Point-of-care testing) is the laboratory tests (such as on blood, urine, feces, tissues, etc.) carried out by medical institutions not at a central laboratory of a hospital or external testing centers, but the rapid testing conducted close to the patient by the medical staff.
The POCT market size in this research has been calculated by totaling the sales of the following ten major categories at businesses: 1) Glucose analyzer, 2) HbA1c analyzer, 3) biochemical analyzer, 4) blood gas analyzer, 5) blood cell counter, 6) blood coagulation time measuring device, 7) Clinical test kit using immunochromatography, 8) immune system measuring device, 9) urine test paper, and 10) genetic test device. However, the glucose analyzers do not include self-monitoring device for blood glucose.
