Market Overview

The domestic POCT (point-of-care testing) market size (i.e., the total sales of 10 major testing categories at the businesses) rose by 38.8% to have generated 153,600 million yen in FY2021.

After FY2020, many companies released COVID-19 antigen test kits that use immunochromatography and expanded the sales. Due to apparent demand for small genetic test devices and reagents for detection of new coronaviruses, a new category called genetic POCT was formed. Although the conventional general POCT market remained low, remarkable increase in demand for COVID-19 tests has boosted the entire market in FY2021.

Noteworthy Topics

Distribution of COVID-19 Antigen Test Kits to Achieve Even to Outside Medical Institutions

The demand for COVID-19 antigen test kits has grown at unprecedented scale and speed for in-vitro diagnostics, not only in medical institutions, but also in the market for safety and security services for residents provided by local governments, etc., and through the pharmacy channel.

Because of surge of feverish outpatients having suppressed the medical care in the seventh wave of pandemic since around July 2022, promotion of self-tests for use at home was discussed. By August 2022, in-vitro diagnostics were admitted to be sold over-the-counter, allowing them to be applied as general test medicines. This attracted attentions for manufacturers of existing clinical testing reagents and devices on their responses for official sales and new entry.

Future Outlook

The POCT market for FY2022 is likely to continue being driven by the COVID-19 testing kits. When observing the statuses of new infection cases as well as of no sign for subduction in pandemic as of the end of August 2022, the COVID-19 antigen test kit market in FY2022 is projected to expand from the previous fiscal year.

While COVID-19 antigen test kits are said to be not as accurate as PCR tests, demand for some high-sensitive antigen test products using specific equipment has drawn attention. Hereafter, if easy-to-use antigen test kits are widespread for home use, it is possible for high-sensitive antigen test kits using different methods may be adopted at medical institutions.

About POCT Market

POCT (Point-of-care testing) is the laboratory tests (such as on blood, urine, feces, tissues, etc.) carried out by medical institutions not at a central laboratory of a hospital or external testing centers, but the rapid testing conducted close to the patient by the medical staff.

The POCT market size is calculated by totaling the sales of the following ten major categories at businesses: 1) Glucose analyzer, 2) HbA1c analyzer, 3) biochemical analyzer, 4) blood gas analyzer, 5) blood cell counter, 6) blood coagulation time measuring device, 7) Clinical test kit using immunochromatography, 8) immune system measuring device, 9) urine test paper, and 10) genetic test device.

The glucose analyzers do not include self-monitoring device for blood glucose.
