Market Overview

The domestic market size of total major 9 categories of toys for FY2020 increased by 13.4% from the previous fiscal year to 726,200 million yen (based on the shipment value at manufacturers). The market size of total major 8 categories (excluding TV games) was valued at 341,200 million yen, also showing a rise by 1.8% from the preceding fiscal year.
In view of the major 8 categories, 3 categories recorded a double-digit growth: Jigsaw puzzles grew by 61.6% from the previous fiscal year, toys for building scale models/toys for hobbies by 16.0%, and analogue games by 15.0%. Hampered by the lack of megahit items, the boys’ characters & toys market, which represents approximately 12 % of the market share, continues to indicate declining trend, although regular products like trading card games sold well.
The market of major 9 categories including TV games has expanded, because of the release of new TV game hardware in addition to the favorable “at-home” demand.
