Trends and Outlook for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Business
 — Current Business Models Using Grid-Scale and Renewable Energy Co-Located BESS, and the Fundamental Value of BESS Facilities as Power Infrastructure

Wednesday, September 16, 2026 | 2:30 PM–3:30 PM JST | Online

[Seminar Overview]

  • 2:30 PM – 3:20 PM

As renewable energy deployment expands and thermal power generation declines, the use of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is rapidly gaining attention in Japan. Grid-scale BESS and BESS co-located with renewable energy facilities can provide balancing capacity for the power grid and absorb surplus electricity. Following the full opening of Japan’s balancing market in fiscal 2024, the domestic BESS business has entered a phase of full-scale development.

At present, high returns are anticipated because prices for primary balancing capacity have remained at the market price cap. At the same time, however, the business environment is changing rapidly due to factors such as revisions to the price cap and increasingly lengthy grid connection procedures.

This seminar will explain current trends, the outlook, and key challenges in the battery storage facility business.

Topics:

  1. Business models for grid-scale and renewable energy co-located BESS, and an overview of Japan’s electricity markets
  2. Market size, growth drivers, and barriers in the BESS business
  3. Key topics shaping the BESS market: revisions to the balancing market price cap and measures to expedite grid connection
  4. Outlook and challenges for the BESS business

Speaker: Tatsuya Kamiyama, Senior Researcher
