WHATS Seminar Vol. 215 [Online] titled above will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025
[Seminar Overview]
- 2:30 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.
Aging Underwater Infrastructure and the Need for New Management Approaches
During Japan's period of rapid economic growth, numerous infrastructures such as dams, highways, bridges, water pipes, and ports were constructed. These infrastructures are now aging simultaneously.
While infrastructure above the surface can be monitored using technologies such as drones, underwater structures often lack standardized inspection methods. This has led to a growing number of unresolved challenges.
This seminar will cover the background behind the aging of infrastructure, the management approaches that are now required, and current trends in the industry.
Topics include:
- Self-Introduction and Business Overview
- Aging infrastructure
- Case studies of underwater infrastructure accidents
- Limitations of conventional inspection methods and emerging areas of inspection
- Introduction to new inspection technologies: What is an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle, underwater drone)?
- Requirements for ROVs
- Summary
Speaker:
Yusuke Sato, CEO, Suiryu Corporation
Mr. Sato began his career in 2011 at TOYO Corporation, where he worked in the sales department for oceanographic measurement equipment. He participated in coastal surveys in the Tohoku region to investigate tsunami damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and engaged in reconstruction support.
In 2019, he joined Nippon Kaiyo Co., Ltd., where he started developing ROVs (underwater drones) and launched a commissioned development business. Subsequently, in 2021, he established the Japan ROV Association and in 2022, founded Suiryu Corporation, where he is dedicated to the development and promotion of underwater robots, including ROVs.
