WHATS Seminar Vol. 188 [Online] “Current Situation and Future Prospects in the Next-Generation Battery Market”

WHATS Seminar Vol. 188 [Online] “Current Situation and Future Prospects in the Next-Generation Battery Market” will be held online on Monday, September 9, 2024.

[Seminar Overview]

Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries (LiB) were commercialized in Japan for the first time in 1991, and the market has expanded starting with applications in consumer-use small devices such as smartphones and laptop computers. Currently, the majority of demand is for use in electric vehicles (xEVs) and energy storage system (ESS) in response to the global trend to curb carbon emissions and expand introduction of renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality. Market growth in these applications is expected to continue in the future.

On the other hand, it is said that the current LiBs are reaching their limits in terms of energy density and other performance improvements, and there are concerns about the stable procurement of rare metals (lithium, cobalt, nickel, etc.) that are the raw materials in the medium to long term due to their reserves and geopolitical risks. As a result, the development of “next-generation batteries,” including batteries with higher capacity than current LiBs and batteries that do not contain rare metals, is gaining momentum both in Japan and overseas.
