[Overview of the seminar]

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015 to achieve a circular society, including efforts to recycle plastics. Also, in 2017, China announced a new policy to ban the import of plastics for recycling, forcing countries around the world, including Japan, to significantly reduce their export of plastics for recycling. The trend of “plastic-free” products has been seen among the users by using alternative materials instead, but there are concerns that completely eliminating plastics would increase the environmental burden. In this seminar, the environment surrounding the plastic recycling market and its prospects including the current status of plastic recycling, the efforts made by market players (companies) to achieve the “plastic-free” society, and the goals of future business development will be analyzed.
