Laundry Services Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2026
Laundry Services Market Valued at 279,970 Million Yen in 2025, 99.6% of Preceding Year
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has carried out a survey on the domestic laundry services market and found out the current status and the trends by segment.
Summary of Research Findings
The domestic laundry services market (comprising dry cleaners, laundromats, and door-to-door laundry services) was valued at 279,970 million yen in 2025, which represents 99.6% of the preceding year (based on the sales at businesses). When analyzed by segment, dry cleaners and door-to-door laundry services declined to 154,000 million yen (98.7% YoY) and 10,430 million yen (99.6% YoY) of the preceding year, respectively. Meanwhile, laundromats grew to 115,540 million yen, representing 100.9% of the previous year.Surging overhead costs and cautious consumer spending in a weak economy are driving a wave of closures and bankruptcies among dry cleaners. Since 2024, the rising prices of fuel, detergents and other laundry chemicals—alongside higher labor costs fueled by a persistent labor shortage—have severely pressured profit margins. While many businesses have raised their end prices to absorb these overheads, the overall business climate remains challenging. Furthermore, consumer demand has shifted drastically as telework becomes the norm and business attire becomes increasingly casual. This shift, coinciding with the rise of high-performance home washing machines, the popularity of washable suits, and the convenience of modern laundromats, has caused demand for traditional dry cleaners. Small, long-standing dry cleaners are particularly vulnerable. In addition to an aging owners and a lack of successors, the high cost of replacing outdated equipment is often the final trigger for many businesses to close their business.

Trends in The Laundromat Market
The laundromat market is sized at 115,540 million yen in 2025, 100.9% of the preceding year (based on the sales at businesses). Compared to other service segments, the laundromat market remained resilient during the COVID-19 crisis, characterized by its lower market volatility. This stable demand is underpinned by several factors: the essential nature of laundry for maintaining a healthy living environment, the increase of dual-income households, and shifting housing trends. In addition, a growing preference for hygienic laundry—specifically as a preventative measure against allergens like hay fever and mites—has solidified demand. Furthermore, the market is being invigorated by the rise of hybrid laundromats, such as those integrated with cafes or other retail services.
