Market Overview

The estimated global stationary energy storage system (ESS) market size based on manufacturer shipment capacity was 13,687 MWh for home use and 5,733 MWh for corporate and commercial use in 2024.

Installations of residential and commercial/corporate systems increased due to demand for emergency measures against natural disasters or abnormal weather patterns causing blackouts; business continuity planning; and supply-demand balancing through peak shaving and load shifting to suppress rising electricity costs from the grid (i.e., charging power during off-peak hours to use during peak hours). Additionally, installations increased due to the decreasing unit selling price of electricity generated by photovoltaic facilities for self-consumption. Furthermore, the government and municipal incentives and subsidies for deploying renewable energy plants and ESSs to achieve carbon-neutral societies are boosting the ESS market.
As these trends are continuing, the global stationary ESS market size is forecast to reach 15,557 MWh for home use, a 13.7% increase from the previous year, and 6,520MWh for corporate and commercial use, also, a 13.7% increase from the previous year.

Noteworthy Topics

Trends of ESS for Home Use, and Corporate or Commercial Use

To encourage the deployment of photovoltaic systems in homes, net metering and the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) programs were introduced. These programs enabled electric power companies to purchase excess electricity generated by residences at a fixed rate. Subsequently, reductions in FIT purchase prices increased the importance of self-consumption and led to an increase in ESS deployments. Additionally, time-of-use pricing has improved the economics of ESS, thereby increasing demand for them as a means of reducing electricity costs.

Meanwhile, various incentives in major countries are boosting the corporate and commercial ESS market. Moreover, advancements in AI technology and growth in the cryptocurrency industry are increasing the need for new and expanded datacenters. These establishments are expected to promote ESS deployment to ensure stable electricity supplies, which will be a major growth driver of the corporate and commercial ESS market.

Future Outlook

In the residential ESS market, declining electricity selling prices have led to growing interest in self-consumption, driving the ESS installations. Many households in Japan, Europe, and North America live in detached houses, and are installing ESS, particularly in regions with relatively high electricity costs. However, ESS have not been widely adopted by households with photovoltaic systems, which leaves room for further market growth.
Meanwhile, the corporate and commercial ESS market continues to expand primarily in North America (especially the US), Europe, and China. This expansion stems from the growing demand for business continuity planning measures and for supply-demand balancing through peak shaving and load shifting to reduce rising electricity costs from the grid (i.e., charging power during off-peak hours for use during peak hours). Furthermore, various incentives offered by major countries, including subsidies and tax benefits, are also expected to boost the market.

For these reasons, the global stationary ESS market is forecast to reach 53,740 MWh for home use and 15,939 MWh for corporate and commercial use by 2033, based on manufacturer shipment capacity.

About Residential or Corporate/Commercial Stationary Energy Storage Systems (ESS)

This research discusses stationary energy storage systems (ESS) intended for residential, corporate, and commercial use. Residential ESS refers to systems used in detached houses or housing complexes such as condominiums and apartments. However, it does not include lead-acid batteries used for home use in developing countries and regions (such as parts of India and Africa) with fragile electric infrastructure are not included.

Corporate or commercial ESS refers to energy storage systems used in public facilities, office buildings, medical facilities, welfare and long-term care facilities, factories, logistics warehouses, data centers, and commercial facilities, such as shopping malls and convenience stores. These systems are intended to serve as emergency electric sources, support business continuity planning (BCP) measures, and meet the large-scale electricity demands (e.g., factories and buildings).

Battery types of stationary storage systems include chemical energy storage systems such as lithium-ion batteries, lead storage batteries, nickel hydrogen batteries, redox flow (RF) batteries, and sodium-based batteries (sodium-sulfur batteries, sodium-nickel chloride batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and sodium molten-salt batteries.)
