Market Overview

The domestic market size of surveillance camera systems, based on the vendor shipment values, reached 199,900 million yen in FY2023, 110.9 percent of the size in the previous fiscal year. As the applications of video content analysis (VCA) systems and cloud camera services have diversified, being used not only for security but also for digital transformation solutions using cameras in marketing, security management, transportation management, and medical institutions, the demand for security and surveillance camera systems has expanded. Added to the growth of IP cameras required for the above applications, the overall market has been growing steadily.

While analog cameras and their peripherals (digital video recorders (DVRs) and encoders) are on the decline, the penetration of high-definition analog cameras with high resolution and the affordability with more reasonable prices than those of IP cameras, the demand for analog cameras is still persistent, averting a significant decline in demand.

Noteworthy Topics

The Cloud Camera Service Market in Japan

Cloud camera service is a service for recording and storing videos from an IP camera (or a network camera) in the cloud via the Internet, with the aim of managing on-site operations from a remote area. The accumulated number of IP cameras operated in the market is a part of the total number of IP cameras.

The accumulated number of cloud cameras in the domestic cloud camera service market reached 440 thousand units in FY2023. The number is expected to increase significantly to 547.5 thousand units in FY2024. With steady growth expected, the cumulative number of cloud cameras is forecast to reach 1.31 million units in FY2029. Subscription services for cloud cameras, which enable the deployment of cameras at a relatively low cost, have proliferated and become mainstream. This has enabled SMEs to enjoy using the camera systems for marketing and other solutions, broadening the market base.

Future Outlook

The market size of security/surveillance camera systems (based on vendor shipment values) in Japan is projected to be 225,200 million yen in FY2024, up 12.7% year on year, and to reach 410,800 million yen by FY2029. Driven by VCA systems and cloud camera services, the market is projected to expand steadily beyond FY2024, with camera applications for marketing and image analysis continuing to grow.

The overall market for security/surveillance camera systems is expected to continue to thrive as a value-added business of image analysis software rather than as a business of cameras as hardware. On the other hand, it may be difficult to differentiate the business of solutions that include software. It will be important for each vendor to characterize and develop its camera solutions to present to customers while providing effective image/video analysis or information analysis services.

The Security/Surveillance Cameras/Systems Market

The security/surveillance cameras/systems market in this research includes security/surveillance cameras (IP and analog cameras), digital video recorders (DVRs), network video recorders (NVRs), encoders, video management system (VMS) software, video content analytics (VCA) systems, cloud camera services hardware and software used in various fields. Infrared cameras and thermal cameras and thermography related systems are not included. The market size is calculated based on vendor shipment values. Installation and maintenance costs are not included.

In this research, security/surveillance cameras are categorized into two types: IP cameras and analog cameras. IP cameras, a.k.a. network cameras, have an IP address to individually connect to the Internet, making them suitable for business use. Analog cameras, on the other hand, must be physically connected to monitors and recording devices using coaxial cables. In general, analog cameras are less expensive than IP cameras.
A digital video recorder (DVR): A generic term for an electronic device that records and stores a video captured by an analog camera in a digital format on a hard disk (including a hard drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card, SSD, or other local or network mass storage device).
A network video recorder (NVR): A generic term for an electronic device that records and stores a video captured by an IP camera in a digital format on a hard disc (including a hard drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card, SSD, or other local or network mass storage device).
An encoder: A tool that converts video from large RAW files into streamable digital files.
A video management system/software (VMS): Software that stores and manages a video captured by a security camera on recording media.
Video content analysis (VCA): A function that digitizes various information by analyzing data from images and videos captured by cameras, such as facial recognition, the number of people measured, a vehicle number recognized, and a moving or stationary body detected, which can lead to work efficiency.
Cloud camera service: A service for recording and storing video from a camera in the cloud over the Internet.
