Market Overview

At onsite work, IT technologies have come to be used aiming to solve the issues of manpower shortage, manpower training (education), inheritance of knowhow, and security & health management of workers.  In addition, for the past several years, wider acceptance of IoT and progress of smart devices have made both of them to be integrated into various solutions that can contribute to variety of onsite works, attracting many workers to consider introduction.

The number of domestic field service management solutions in FY2017 was estimated to be 4,970, 192.6% of the number in the previous fiscal year.  However, many of such solutions currently have remained at the phases of PoC or demonstrations, and not a few of them have been proposed as a part of some SI projects planned by IT vendors.  There are some provided free of charge, so that those externally sold as “field service management solutions” are extremely few.

Wider acceptance of IoT and progress of smart devices for the past several years have made both of them to be integrated into various solutions that contribute to variety of onsite works, attracting many workers to consider introduction.  To be precise, onsite business structure, i.e., business promotion structure, has changed by the use of IoT, while building of business models that transform the entire business processes has become available through utilization of various smart devices.

For example, decision making and assessment that arise in the maintenance tasks of production facilities and machinery together with infrastructure facilities have long been dependent on the experience and feelings of the competent, skilled workers.  By transforming such knowhow into data, and by visualizing them, not only the experienced workers but also the middle-tier and even some of new workers are expected to be able to do the maintenance tasks successfully, without failure.  Consequently, the tasks can be done more efficiently and the structure of such business can be transformed into the one that attains business continuity.

Therefore, introduction of field service management solutions available through the combination of IoT and smart devices have potential to create innovative business models, especially in the manufacturing and construction industries.

What are Field Service Management Solutions?

Field service management solutions in this research indicates the solutions or the systems using IT technologies aiming to support the field works conducted by workers wearing uniforms.  The solutions are introduced based on IoT and networks for the purposes such as efficiency improvement, workload reduction, manpower training (education), inheritance of knowhow, and security & health management of workers.
Before the actual implementation, PoC (Proof of Concept) and demonstration processes have been started in the industries including manufacturing, construction, infrastructure/disaster prevention, transportation/warehousing, distribution, security, medical, longterm care/healthcare, building management, agricultural/forestry/fishery, and etc.  The solutions comprise of those devices able to connect to IoT or internet, such as smart devices (smart glasses; smart watches; stretchable devices including clothing types and band types), HMDs (Head Mounted Displays), smartphones, tablets, cameras, various robots, and drones.
