Catheter & Tube and IVR Product Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2023
Catheter & Tube and IVR Product Market Expected to Recover to 391,600 Million Yen for FY2022, Up 2.4% on Year-on-Year Basis
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic market of catheter & tube and IVR product, and found out the market size transition, the trends of product implementation by clinical category, the market share by domestic manufacturers/total distributors of imported products, the sales strategies of market players, and the promising products for years to come.
The catheter & tube and IVR products refer to single-use medical devices (for diagnosis or medical treatment) used at hospitals, clinics, and clinical laboratories. While the revision of medical payment system in recent years has had negative impact on the sales of quite a few domestic medical devices, the medical devices market as a whole (i.e., the market including catheter & tube and IVR products) has been showing a slight increase or has at least leveled off.
FY2021 witnessed recoveries in the number of surgeries performed, particularly non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the COVID-19 crisis, as well as in the number of outpatients of some disease types, almost to the pre-pandemic level. Although some products are still affected by the decrease of outpatients/inpatients during the pandemic, most product categories are turning for the better. The catheter & tube and IVR products market for FY2021 is valued at 382,242 million yen, up 3.7% from the previous fiscal year (based on the shipment value at makers). Since the market is on recovery trend, it is forecasted to grow by 2.4% in FY2022 on year-on-year basis to 391,600 million yen.
Market Trend of Cardiovascular Catheters Used for Ablation
The number of catheter ablation (PTSMA) cases as arrhythmia treatment has been on a rise, with 71,574 atrial fibrillation (AF) cases among the total of 98,958 treatment cases performed in FY2021. IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound) and ICE (Intracardiac Echocardiography) are estimated to have been used for 90% or more for such cases.
As the cases of PTSMA increases, the shipment volume of catheter for ablation treatment has also risen, which boosted the market of electrode-catheter and distal-end-movable sheath introducer sets. The market size of ablation treatment catheters as a total of these is projected to expand to 92,151 million yen for FY2021 (up 7.1% on year-on-year basis) on to 98,495 million yen for FY2022 (up 6.9% on year-on-year basis).
With the demand for non-invasive procedure grows as an alternative to surgical procedure, the average annual growth rate of the catheter & tube and IVR products market had been a little under 10% up to around FY2000. Nonetheless, the market trends of catheter & tube and IVR products is expected to polarize by category, owing to fast aging society that boosts the growth of certain product categories, while other major products make a double-digit drop due to the revision of the medical payment system. Considering the situation, the market size of catheter & tube and IVR products is forecasted to reach 406,805 million yen by FY2026, up 6.4% from FY2021.
