Summary of Research Findings

The corporate questionnaire was carried out in September 2022 to food-related businesses that use food inspection/analysis services and/or food testing kits, to observe their food safety measures, implementation status of various food inspections, outsourcing status, use status of rapid test kits, status of visual inspection (appearance check), as well as their challenges and demand. A total of 100 domestic major businesses responded, which include food/beverage manufacturers, food services, food processing services for ready-to-eat meals, and meal services.

According to the results of the questionnaire, all businesses (100%) stated that they “practice food sanitation at food production sites/distribution/retail and food safety training on employees comprehensively” to ensure food safety. It also revealed that “inspection on raw materials and products (food)” is done at 99.0% of the respondents, and “introduction of food safety management system” is set in place at 97.0% of the respondents. The result confirmed that the COVID-19 crisis has increased awareness for food sanitation at businesses, and therefore they have established a system to manage food safety and conduct various types of inspections thoroughly.

Noteworthy Topics

Current Status of Food Analysis Services and Food Test Kits Businesses

As online-style business started during the pandemic has taken root in food inspection/analysis services and the situation coincided with the HACCP institutionalization, business of HACCP-related workshops and seminar stayed strong. In addition, inspection and audit services on food sanitation at food production sites and stores, including use of rapid test kits, are growing. There is also a sign of recovery in export-related demand, which had been temporarily halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the characteristics of food testing kits differ one from another depending on the test object, sales growth is seen across the market. Compared to the positive impact of surging demand for ATP (adenosine triphosphate) swab tests in the field of cleaning services as a sanitary control measure, the negative influence of the COVID-19 was generally trivial to this market.
