Communication Strategies for Achieving a True Tourism-Oriented Nation

Sustainable Multilingual Support to Cater to the 50% Non-English/Non-Chinese Speaking Visitors -

In 2024, the number of international visitors to Japan surpassed 36 million, exceeding the pre-pandemic record in 2019 by 5 million and marking a full recovery from COVID-19. The government's goal of attracting 60 million visitors now seems within reach.

However, more important than the total number is the diversity of these visitors. Unlike in the past, Japan is no longer reliant on Chinese tour groups, and the diversity of inbound tourists has increased. Currently, about half of the visitors do not speak English or Chinese, with many being speakers of less common languages. To truly become a tourism-oriented nation, Japan must be able to welcome people from a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds, effectively communicate the country’s appeal, and promote broader spending across tourism sectors beyond dining, accommodations, and souvenirs.

In this seminar, the COO of Oyraa Inc., a company that provides innovative voice interpretation services and collaborates with tourism associations, DMOs, and tourism businesses, will discuss what is happening in the tourism industry, what the "language barrier" is, and what can be done to effectively and efficiently overcome it, using concrete case examples.

  1. Current trends in inbound tourism
  2. Communication challenges in the tourism industry
  3. Defensive and proactive strategies for multilingual support
  4. Case studies of recent initiatives
  5. Future outlook
