WHATS Seminar Vol. 201 [Online] titled above will be held online on Tuesday, December 24, 2024
[Seminar Overview]
- 4:00 p.m. – 4:50 p.m.
Outlook and Strategies for the PAN-Based Carbon Fiber and Composite Materials Market
The global carbon fiber market has long been driven by Japanese carbon fiber manufacturers. In the 1970s, Toray developed the T300, which has now become a global standard as a material to replace glass fiber in FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic). As a lightweight and high-strength material, offering properties such as tensile strength and rigidity, it has steadily expanded its market through applications in the aerospace and mobility sectors, the sports and leisure industries where lightness and flexibility are essential, and in pressure tanks.
In recent years, new energy applications, such as wind turbine blades and hydrogen pressure tanks, have further boosted demand. While Japanese manufacturers continue to lead this growing market, competition from Chinese manufacturers, particularly in large-tow carbon fiber, and concerns from CFRP manufacturers about the cost and supply of carbon fiber pose challenges.
The carbon fiber market is expected to continue its steady growth. However, a notable divergence in perspectives exists between carbon fiber manufacturers and users, regarding the anticipated pace of this growth and its implications for the industry.
To ensure large-scale use of carbon fibers, it is critical to build a robust environment and supply chain through collaboration among fiber manufacturers, CFRP manufacturers, and end users. Alignment between fiber producers and CFRP makers will be key to overcoming these challenges.
