Market Overview

The home renovation market in Japan was sized at 7.5 trillion yen in 2025, up by 2.5% from the preceding year. By segment, all construction works (categorized as either over or under 10 square meters; including extensions and structure/layout alterations) declined by 22.1% from the previous year, while facility repairs and maintenance expenditure and furniture and interior expenditure grew by 4.7% and 5.6%, respectively.

Market demand is primarily driven by Japan’s 'Dankai Junior' generation—the country’s second baby-boomer cohort—who are increasingly undertaking home renovations and upgrades. Concurrently, the market has experienced sharp cost increases for both construction materials and labor. This rise in contract values was further accelerated by government subsidies promoting residential insulation, which incentivized homeowners to expand their project scopes to include upgrades like high-efficiency window and sash replacements. Supported by these compounding factors and sustained consumer demand, the home renovation market achieved robust year-over-year growth in 2025.

Noteworthy Topics

Impact of Geopolitical Tension in The Middle East on Home Renovation Market

Rising tensions in the Middle East in 2026 are negatively impacting the market. Order suspensions and deferred deliveries of housing materials and equipment are delaying construction work, thus postponing revenue recognition for home renovation businesses. Meanwhile, consumer behavior is not uniform: some customers are postponing commitments due to concerns about inflation, while others are accelerating their renovation plans out of fear of further price increases or additional order suspensions. As a result, the home renovation market as a whole is not experiencing a significant downturn.

However, this dynamic poses a significant risk of widening the gap between industry leaders and smaller enterprises. While major corporations leverage their superior procurement power to capture demand and solidify their dominance, smaller companies face worsening financials, further exacerbated by delays in revenue recognition. Ultimately, current socio-economic pressures on material procurement are set to trigger a major industry shake-up, accelerating economic Darwinism across the market.

Future Outlook

The home renovation market is projected to reach 7.7 trillion yen in 2026, up by 1.9% from the previous year.

While tensions in the Middle East and subsequent material cost pressures remain a concern, at this point, their immediate impact on the 2026 market is expected to be minimal. Barring major supply chain delays, sustained demand and elevated construction costs are projected to drive continued growth in the home renovation market. However, this outlook remains sensitive to geopolitical stability; a severe escalation in the Middle East that disrupts the supply of critical materials and equipment could trigger a sharp market downturn.
