With Rapid Progress in Shift to Cloud, Use of Public Cloud as Core System Accelerated

Market Overview

The questionnaire was carried out to domestic private companies during June and October 2022 on the deployment of enterprise software i.e. ERP (finance & accounting, HR & payroll, sales administration, and production management/SCM), CRM and SFA, and was responded back by 509 enterprises. This questionnaire has been carried out once every two years, this time including comparative analysis on cloud infrastructure utilization rate over time.

The characteristic of the survey results this time (2022) was significantly growing usage of public cloud services as enterprise application platform.

When compared to last survey (in 2020), utilization rate of each system by sector rose in 2022, as follows: Financial and accounting systems increased from 8.9% in 2020 to 17.9% in 2022, HR & payroll systems up from 9.0% to 20.7%, sales management systems from 5.9% to 15.2%, production management & SCM systems from 5.1% to 13.0%, and CRM & SFA from 16.1% to 32.1%. When observing the utilization rate transitions from the 2016 survey, it is evident that use of public cloud as a system infrastructure has accelerated in recent years.

Noteworthy Topics

Expansion in Cloud Usage Fueled by Digital Transformation

Behind the increased cloud usage is the progress of digital transformation. As digital transformation requires speed and flexibility, use of cloud (IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS) is indispensable.

With all the momentum to implement digital transformation, the willingness to invest in enterprise applications is stable without waning even amid the corona crisis. In particular, demand for replacing legacy systems to press ahead with digital transformation is expanding as there are many companies using outdated systems after 10 to 20 years since ERP deployment. On the other hand, CRM & SFA have been implemented relatively newer than ERP, making many companies to strategically introduce new systems aiming to utilize data and reinforce the business through digital transformation.

Future Outlook

As a part of corporate policy, increasing numbers of companies are shifting their system infrastructure to public cloud such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, etc. This has led to stable demand for transferring enterprise applications from on premise to cloud.

On the applications’ side, SaaS applications are expanding. In particular, back-office systems that have little difference among companies are easily used in multi-tenant SaaS where multiple users are able to share. Therefore, those back-office systems such as financial & accounting solutions as well as HR & payroll systems, where there are many types of services offered by IT vendors, have been increasingly used.

Cloud-base deployment is underway in enterprise applications both in system infrastructure and in applications.
