Market Overview

The domestic outdoor gear, facilities, and rental market in FY2022 was estimated at 453,670 million yen (102.2% of the size of previous fiscal year). Outdoor apparel enjoyed solid sales due to expansion of demand for daily use, while the recovery in demand for mountaineering gears was driven by the increase of hikers propelled by the lift of pandemic activity restrictions. According to the “Auto Camping Whitepaper 2023” by Japan Auto Camping Federation, although the camping population in 2022 decreased to 6.5 million (86.7% of the preceding year), the sales of outdoor services (usage fee of outdoor facilities and outdoor gear rentals) grew as the number of core campers that visit outdoor facilities several times a year increased. Meanwhile, after the lift of activity restrictions, the flurry of camping that rose during the COVID crisis waned, diminishing the number of entry-level campers who underpinned the market expansion. As a result, the sales of camping gears such as tents stagnated, precipitating a downturn in the domestic outdoor gear, facilities, and rental market.

Camping Become Established as Casual Leisure Activities

Although the demand for camping is still there, the rapid momentum is lost, as the entry-level campers shifted to ‘revenge spending’ on activities that were restricted during the pandemic, such as travel. However, the increase of solo campers and the expansion of rental services have familiarized camping as a casual leisure activity, contributing to stabilization of outdoor equipment demand and a rise of outdoor facility utilization rates.


 

Future Outlook

The domestic outdoor gear, facilities, rental market is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.8% from FY2022 to FY2026, with the market size projected to reach 527,460 million yen by FY2026. Even though a surge in the number of entry-level campers as seen during the pandemic is unlikely to happen hereafter, as the segment that enjoy camping regularly has taken root, steady undertone is forecasted to continue.

The demand for outdoor activities (mountain climbing and camping) is expected to sustain as a part of people's daily lives. Solid demand is expected also for the reason of the trend to incorporate outdoor apparel into everyday outfits is gaining momentum.
