Biomedical Instruments Market (for Diagnosis) in Japan: Key Research Findings 2023

Biomedical Instruments Showed Mixed Conditions by Product: Some Recovered from Reluctant Purchase While Some Downturned Against Rapid Subsidy-Correlated Surge in Demand

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a survey on the biomedical instruments (for diagnosis) market in Japan, and found out the trends by product segment, trends of market players, and future outlook.

Market Overview

This research targets 32 diagnostic biomedical instruments (37 products/57 categories) used at hospitals, clinics, medical centers, etc.

FY2022 saw mixed conditions by product. While some products having enjoyed demand expansion from the COVID-19 preventive subsidies showed continuous increase in purchases just like in the previous fiscal year, most products downturned from the previous fiscal year surge.
On the other hand, some products that had been regarded as lower priority for budget implementation during the corona crisis started having a purchase momentum and showed steady growth. The estimated market size for diagnostic biomedical instruments for FY2022 reached 372,000 million yen, a rise by 2.2%. Rise of production cost caused by soaring expenses for materials and transportation worldwide and prolonged delivery of products due to semiconductor shortages are about to be the serious issue.

Noteworthy Topics

Vital Sign Assessment Instruments & Vital Sign Monitors (High-End to Middle Grade Products)

The market for vital sign assessment instruments and monitors (high-end to middle grade products) targets those equipped at medical institutions from large-scale hospitals to general clinics, which not only include vital sign monitors but also electrocardiograph, electroencephalograph, evoked potential inspection devices, etc., and those products specifically employed at each medical department.

The market for vital sign assessment instruments and monitors (high-end to middle grade products) for FY2022 was estimated as 58,699 million yen, down by 2.3% on a YoY basis. When observing the breakdown, vital sign monitor, that has a large market, showed a downfall against a rapid surge in demand from the COVID-19-related subsidies, cerebral oximetry was on the rise because of recovery of budgets on surgical operation rooms and launch of new products, and fractional flow reserve (FFR) measuring devices also showed a growing tendency due to recovery from hesitant purchases amid the corona crisis. The market for FY2023 has been expected to decline by 0.2% on YoY to 58,600 million yen.

Future Outlook

Although there still are some declines in products that used to have special demand from COVID-19 related subsidies, many products in the biomedical instruments market are likely to grow steadily, improving from hesitant purchases. The market size for FY2023 is projected to rise by 1.2% to 376,450 million yen.
