Summary of Research Findings

In October 2022, Yano Research Institute sent the questionnaire to 167 clinics nationwide that newly started in 2020 and 2021.

To a question asking about the type(s) of system(s) deployed at the time of their opening, the most popular payment system was a credit card system, which was installed at 41.7% of the respondents, followed by automated teller machines/self-checkout machines, and other payment systems for cashless transactions other than credit cards. Meanwhile, the introduction rate of digital patient card system (patient registration/doctor appointment app) was surprisingly low at 4.0% of the total respondent clinics.

Noteworthy Topics

Deployment Rate of Cloud-based EMR Exceeds On-Premise EMR

The survey result showed the considerably high adoption rate of EMR at 93.4%, and the number of clinics that selected cloud-based EMR (51.5%) exceeded clinics that introduced on-premise EMR (41.9%).

One of the main reasons why cloud-based EMR are preferred is that the initial cost of implementation is comparatively lower than on-premise systems, as it does not require purchase of servers to be installed within the clinic.

Moreover, vendors specialized in cloud-based EMR have been making entrance to the market from 2018, while enterprises that conventionally provided on-premise EMR systems have increasingly started offering cloud-based EMR. Having a wider variety of cloud-based EMR systems to choose from is another significant reason for choosing cloud-based EMR systems over on-premise systems.
