Summary of Research Findings

A consumer survey was performed to 5,790 men and women in their 20s to 60s regarding foods with functional claims that have been vigorously developed in recent years against the backdrop of increasing consumer health consciousness. When asked about whether or not taking foods with functional claims, it was found out that over 30% of the respondents were currently taking them. When observing the response by gender and by age group, high ratio was shown by women in their 60s or older with a little less than 40%.

On the other hand, 41.6% of people replied, “Know about foods with functional claims but have not taken one,” especially both men and women in their 40s to 60s responded as such accounted for more than 40%. The most distinctive characteristic of foods with functional claims is that they are labeled with functions that maintain or promote health. If consumers who have no experience of taking such foods start taking these foods expected to solve health issues they suffer from, the market expansion is promising.

Noteworthy Topics

Most Interested Function of Foods with Functional Claims was “Reducing Belly Fat, Losing Weight”

Of those accepted functions labeled on foods with functional claims, the most popular function chosen by the respondents (multiple responses allowed) was “Losing belly fat (body fat/visceral fat), losing weight”, attaining the top rate by both genders and all age groups. In particular, those that chose this function accounted for more than 30% by women in their 20s to 50s and men in their 40s to 50s, with the highest rate observed in both men and women in their 40s to 50s. This seemed to be because of many consumers worrying about increase in weight in the new lifestyle caused by new coronavirus pandemic. Particularly, people in their 40s to 50s seemed to be interested in it, as people in that age group tend to suffer from lowering basal metabolism and start minding about lifestyle diseases.

In addition, the response of “Improvement in stomach conditions, in intestinal environment or constipation, and intestinal regulation” earned approximately 20% from male respondents and around 20 to 30% from female respondents. This was the second most popular response by all age groups of both genders except for male in their 60s or older which chose it as the third most popular response.
