Disinfection Robot Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2021

Opportunities Brought to Disinfection Robots Market in FY2020 as Preventive Measure against COVID-19

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic market of disinfection robots, and found out the trends by product segment, the trends of market players, and future perspectives.

Market Overview

The domestic market of business-use autonomous disinfection robots that delivers autonomous disinfection (of floor surfaces) by self-navigation has taken off as a preventive measure against the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. Although the market entries followed one after another, the domestic market size then was not big enough to be calculated in FY2020. Despite the fact that the COVID situation does not seem to end in FY2021 and consequently the preventive measures against infections are still needed, the market size is still small; the domestic market of disinfection robots for FY2021 is valued at 499 million yen (based on the shipment value at manufacturers).

Noteworthy Topics

Price and Hardware

The business-use disinfection robots can be segmented into three price zones: high-end products that cost over 10 million yen, mid-end products in the range of 4 to 5 million yen, and low-end products priced around 2 million yen. Despite large price differences, products in all price zones have autonomous cruising function using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology; there may be some differences in the performance level or quality of sensors and maturity of control software, but they have similar hardware architecture.

Difference in hardware cannot be identified from disinfection methods either. Regardless of product price, all UV-disinfection robots sterilize with UV-C (deep ultraviolet) and all disinfectant sprayer robots use chemicals (disinfectant) for sterilization.

Future Outlook

While no one knows when the COVID situation ends and prevention measures against infection are demanded for a variety of applications, the situation may bring growth opportunities for disinfection robots that are capable of sanitizing without manual intervention.
However, essential prerequisite for popularization of disinfection robots is that they are harmless, have proven effectiveness of disinfection, reasonably priced, and handy for users.

Research Outline

1.Research Period: August to November 2021
2.Research Object: Domestic manufacturers and distributors of disinfection robots, enterprises involved in R&D of disinfection robots, related associations, and relevant government ministries/agencies
3.Research Methogology: Face-to-face interviews (including online), survey via telephone, and literature research

What is the Disinfection Robot?

The disinfection robot in this research refers to a business-use robot that has both autonomous cruising function and sanitization/disinfection function, which delivers fully autonomous disinfection (of floor surfaces) without any guiding path.
