Global Fingerprint Sensor Market: Key Research Findings 2018

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the UI (user interface) device market and has found out the transition and forecast of global fingerprint sensor market size, the trend of demands, and the future outlook.

Market Overview

User authentication functions using biological information (i.e., fingerprints, faces, irises, voices, and etc.) have come to be equipped within smartphones, tablets, and other small-to-mid-size mobile devices. Especially, fingerprints authentication systems have been increasingly adopted in smartphones not only because of great convenience to unlock the device by just putting the finger on it, but also of ability to enhance security.

The fingerprint sensor market for small-to-mid-size mobile devices has kept on expanding for the past several years.  In 2017, the global fingerprint sensor market size, based on the shipment volume at manufacturers, expanded to 1,111.50 million units, 133.3% of the size of the previous year.  The global fingerprint sensor market is projected to expand furthermore in 2018 and beyond, as those sensors are likely to be embedded in middle-to-low-end smartphones as standard specification, as well as in increasing number of IC cards enabling the payment through fingerprint authentication instead of inputting PIN (Personal Identification Number) codes.

Noteworthy Topics

Fingerprint authentication functions are likely to continue expanding as standard specification of a smartphone, because they can stably take a fingerprint image just by touching a fingerprint sensor system, and because such authentication systems can be installed at low cost.

On the other hand, unlike the conventional button type, fingerprint authentication devices are to be increasingly embedded within displays, leading to improve the designs of small-to-middle-size mobile terminals.  In such a case, device makers are required to cooperate with display makers.  Therefore, building up cooperative relationship becomes the most important requirement for the market players.

In addition, other than small-to-middle-size mobile terminals, fingerprint sensors can be embedded within IC cards.  Use of fingerprint-sensor-equipped credit cards are expected to expand, for they can be a new payment solution that enable payment by just scanning fingerprints which are fast, convenient, and highly secured.

Research Outline

1.Research Period: From August to October, 2018
2.Research Object: UI (user interface) device makers for mobile terminals such as smartphones.
3.Research Methogology: Face-to-face interviews by the expert researchers, and literature research

What is UI (User Interface) Devices?

UI (User Interface) devices in this research indicate various sensors, sensor modules, touchscreens, actuators for force feedback, drive ICs, and etc. to authenticate via fingerprints, faces, irises, voices, and etc., able to be embedded within smartphones, tablets, and other small-to-middle-size mobile terminals.  Also, such devices installed within IC cards, various security appliances, medical equipment, and automobiles are partly included.
