Consumer Survey on Aesthetic Medicine in Japan: Key Research Findings 2024

Women Interested in Medical Aesthetics But Never Had Treatments Prioritize “Clear Pricing”, “Medic with High Reputation/Plenty of Treatment Cases”, and “Patient-oriented Counseling” When Choosing A Clinic

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a consumer survey on the aesthetic medicine and analyzed the demand for aesthetic medicine among women in their 20s to 50s. This press release announces some of our findings.

Summary of Research Findings

When we asked a total of 400 women in their 20s to 50s nationwide, to indicate which facial aspect they were most concerned about (or they wanted medical treatment for), “dark spots/birthmarks/moles”, “wrinkles/sagging skin”, and “teeth” was the top 3, in a descending order. The result suggests that “teeth”, which came in fourth in the 2023 Survey*, replaced “acne/acne scars”, which ranked fourth in this year’s survey. Similarly, when asked to indicate which aspect of their body they are most concerned about, top 3 were “unwanted hair”, “waist (excess fat, cellulite)”, and “legs (excess fat, cellulite)”. The ranking of the second and third reversed from the result of the 2023 Survey.

Among 200 respondents that had medical aesthetic treatments, “clear pricing” and “convenient location” tied as a top determinant factor for choosing a clinic, followed by “medic with high reputation/ plenty of treatment cases”. “Accessible pricing” and “medic with high reputation/ plenty of treatment cases” reversed from the 2023 Survey, with “accessible pricing” ranked fifth in this year’s survey. The result suggests that they have become increasingly conscious about the “expertise of a medic / number of treatment cases performed” when selecting a clinic.

Asking Women Interested in Medical Aesthetics But Never Undergone Treatments: What Are The Criteria for Selecting A Medical Aesthetic Clinic If They Were to Have Treatments?

In this year’s survey, we asked 200 women who are interested in medical aesthetics but have never undergone any treatments, why they have not sought for treatments. The top 3 reasons were “cost (too costly)”, “concern for safety”, and “fear (of treatment/procedure)”.

We also asked the same respondents what they consider the most when choosing a clinic if they were to seek for medical aesthetic treatments, “clear pricing” ranked first, followed by “medic with high reputation/ plenty of treatment cases” and “patient-oriented counseling”. Considering the reversed rating of “medic with high reputation/ plenty of treatment cases” and “patient-oriented counseling” from the 2023 Survey, it can be assumed that “expertise of medic & number of treatment cases” has increased significance as a factor to decide which clinic to go, not only among people that have had treatments before but also for people with no medical aesthetic treatment experience.
