Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on new market entries to the IoT-related market (IoT-related vendors, AI/analysis vendors, smart device vendors and others), and found out when they made their market entry and which industry their target customer belongs to.

Market Overview

This research is targeted to IT-related companies founded after FY1995 with share capital less than 1.5 billion yen that have made new entry to the IoT-related market. According to the disclosed information, 456 companies have made entrance to the market.

Target customers of the 456 vendors are categorize by industry (* a total of 1,674 cases; one vendor may target to more than one industry), and incidence rate per industry is calculated (indicated hereafter in %). The result shows that “marketing/services” (35.7%) is the largest group with 163 cases, followed by “retail/distribution” (35.3%) and “manufacturing” (34.9%). On the other hand, “agriculture/animal husbandry” (5.9%), “education/training” (14.5%), and “automotive” (16.7%) were the lowest target industries.

Meanwhile, based on the fact that the total number of “IT (telecom)” (26.3%), “education/training” (14.5%), and “others” (44.1%) adds up to 387 cases, the survey reveals that the companies that newly started IoT-related business provide offerings that can be used by customers in various types of industry. 

Future Outlook

In view of business domain of the 456 businesses surveyed in this research, IoT vendors account for the most, occupying 54.6% of the total with 249 companies, followed by AI/analysis vendors (145 companies/31.8%) and smart device vendors (92 companies/20.2%). It should be noted, however, that some companies are counted in more than one business domain.

Out of the “others”, 208 companies (45.6%) are those that utilize IoT/AI for the purpose of improving its own operation efficiency and/or reducing manpower, or deployment of IoT/AI technologies to their existing products/services. In some cases, they sell their system/solution to others. Another type of “others” is the entries from other industries, which counts to 38 companies (8.3%). In many cases, these companies sell AI systems.

In accordance with the expansion of IoT-related businesses in the last couple of years, it is forecasted that new market entries will increase further especially in the IoT domain hereafter.

This research is targeted to IT-related companies that have been founded after FY1995 with share capital less than 150 million yen, that have made new entry to the IoT-related market. Various disclosed information is used to determine the market entrance.


However, some companies that do not fit into this definition may be included, if a company 1) include capital surplus in the value of share capital, 2) discloses information only on a consolidated/group basis, or 3) is established before FY1994 but its operation substantially started in FY1995 or later.

The scope of this survey includes IoT-related businesses, which can be categorized into 4 groups: 1) IoT-related vendors (IoT platform, IoT solution, IoT device, IoT network, IoT starter kit, etc.), 2) AI/analysis vendors (image analysis/image recognition, natural language processing/speech recognition, machine learning, deep learning, AI translation, optimization, data analysis, data analysis, frequency fluctuation analysis[anomalous sound detection], structure analysis, simulation, etc.), 3) Smart device vendors (IoT devices, AR/VR/MR, smartglass, etc.), and 4) others (utilizing services for its group company, entry from other industry, etc.).
