Hair Care Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2020
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic hair care market and has found out the market trends by category, the trends of market players, and the future outlook.
The domestic hair care market size (the total market sizes of hair, hair transplantation, hair-growth & hair-restoration products, and hair-care products) in FY2018 attained 452,750 million yen, 100.9 % compared to a previous fiscal year, based on the sales at the businesses. While the market was influenced by consumption tax hike from October 2019 and COVID-19 infections since early 2020, first half of FY2019 showed steady growth with sales rose from the preceding fiscal year in all 4 categories. Especially the markets of hair-care products and hair transplantation showed favorable sales, respectively.
The hair care market in FY2020 is projected to reach 434,200 million yen, 95.9% of the preceding fiscal year based on the sales at the businesses.
Outbreak of the novel coronavirus from early 2020 and measures for preventing infection influenced hair-care products, face-to-face sales of hair business, and hair transplantation treatments at medical clinics. The COVID-19 crisis is leaving lasting scars in the market, and it is assumed that it will take some time for the number of customers visiting stores/salons/clinics to recover to the pre-pandemic level. As restrictions will be softened step by step toward 2021 to invigorate the movement of people and goods in and out of the country, consumption in general will improve, and hair care market is also expected to recover gradually.
