Uniform Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2018
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has conducted a survey on the domestic uniform market for FY2018 and has clarified the market overview, market trend by demand, and the future outlook.
The domestic uniform market in FY2017 based on the shipment value at manufacturers attained 516,500 million yen, 101.0% of the size of the previous fiscal year. Although the total domestic uniform market has maintained on the path of recovery, the category of office and school uniforms have declined, whereas working and service uniforms exceeded the previous fiscal-year results. The market of school uniforms, though having shown ups and downs in the past, are likely to be on the decline for the future, because the number of students is decreasing and many schools have been integrated and/or abolished. The shipment of office uniforms, which had kept being on the rise, turned to a decrease in FY2017. The market trends of uniforms in the future may become more markedly different depending on the category.
Uniforms for Medical Facilities, Restaurants, and Food Factories Boosted Service Uniforms as a Whole
The uniform market consists of four categories, and each category is classified into more detailed segments according to type of work and industry of the users. Among various types of uniforms, service uniforms show favorable growth, especially those for medical facilities (hospitals, long-term facilities, and etc.) due to increase in number of such facilities, and for restaurants and food factories due to expanding demand of dining out.
When looking at the market by demand, the market size of office uniforms and school uniforms is unlikely to change for the better, but rather continues the negative growth. On the other hand, the market of working and service uniforms is promising to be on the rise, driving the entire market to increase slightly. The forecast of the total domestic uniform market size for FY2020 based on the shipment value at manufacturers is likely to expand to 528,600 million yen. However, depending on the declining level of school uniforms, there is no denying that the entire uniform market may fall into negative growth.
