[Overview of the seminar]

As the Japanese saying “Iron is a nation.” goes, iron has been the turning point and the key factor in the creation of the nation since ancient times. Also in modern times, iron has been an indispensable part of the social infrastructure due to the Meiji Restoration’s policy of increasing national wealth and military power in the post-war reconstruction period and the high-growth period. Today, iron is at a turning point again since a trend of decarbonization has started.

Recently, iron recycling has been attracting attention with the process called urban mining. Unlike rare metals, recycled iron is a material that contributes to the social infrastructure, and unlike iron made from iron ore or iron sand in a blast furnace, recycled iron was the one melted in an “electric furnace” to be reused. The current status and future prospects of the industry of recycled iron produced in an electric furnace will be briefly introduced in this seminar.
