Market Overview

Currently, non-beam WPT has been growing mainly among small electronic devices, making the global market size of non-beam WPT transmitter & receiver modules to be estimated as 507,284 million yen, based on the sales at businesses. The market has been driven by WPT modules embedded in smartphones and wearables (smartwatch, smart band, earphones, etc.), while those for industrial machinery such as for AGVs, conveyor robots, construction machinery, etc. also steadily growing. On the other hand, the most-wanted WPT systems for EVs are still in the R&D or demonstrative processes, with the full-scale launch expected to be after 2030.

Noteworthy Topics

Beam WPT Business is Led Globally by Start-Ups, Meaning Still a Promising Market for Any Companies

In Japan, partial amendment to the Radio Act in May 2022 has enabled the practical use of the beam WPT technology that allows transferring of power to a few-meter-distant sensors or devices via microwave-used electromagnetic wave energy. Though limited to small electricity at indoor space with certain conditions met, the business has started since 2023 by related companies.

The 2023 domestic beam WPT transmitter/receiver modules market size by sales at businesses is estimated to be 2,300 million yen. Because there are some regulations, the WPT applications are limited to IoT sensors at manufacturing sites, centered on WPT modules for factory automation (FA)/logistics machinery and HVAC or light control devices for office buildings. Many of companies around the world that develop beam WPT business tend to be start-ups at this time.

Future Outlook

Currently, the global non-beam WPT market that has been growing among small electronic devices is projected to expand furthermore, reaching 1,082,400 million yen by 2033, as the automation of manufacturing sites increases the modules for industrial machinery, and as WPT modules are to be installed in EVs.

With further expansion of beam WPT business for FA and logistics machineries, and development to various applications including building management, long-term care, and watching, the market for the domestic beam WPT (transmitter/receiver modules) is projected to reach 168,500 million yen by 2030 and 841,800 million yen by 2040.

Research Outline

1.Research Period: September 2023 to January 2024
2.Research Object: Wireless power transfer related companies (beam or non-beam WPT module manufacturers)
3.Research Methogology: Face-to-face and online interviews by the expert researchers, and literature research

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)

Wireless power transfer (WPT) can be categorized into beam and non-beam styles, as follows:
Non-beam WPT includes inductive coupling and resonant inductive coupling that use electromagnetic field energy to supply power, and electric field coupling that use electric field energy to feed power. Several scores of kHz to some MHz, lower frequency band than beam WPT, are allocated to and used by non-beam WPT.
Meanwhile, beam WPT includes microwave or laser WPT that use electromagnetic wave energy for power transfer. Unlike non-beam WPT that feed power in the near field, beam WPT enables to feed power wirelessly to a few meters of distance away.
The WPT modules market in this research has been calculated based on the sales at businesses for transmitter modules/devices and receiver modules/devices that are used for the above types of WPT systems.
