Market Overview

Domestic market of foreign language classes (as a total of 3 markets; foreign language classes for grown-ups, foreign language classes for children/infants, and preschools) attained 295.2 billion yen in FY2022, down by 2.3% from the preceding fiscal year, based on the sales of businesses.

The need for foreign language education remained low in FY2022 due to the prolongation of the COVID situation, in which Japanese people could not travel abroad until October 2022 when border measures to prevent the spread of the infection were lifted. Although the May 2023 reclassification of COVID-19 to Class 5 Infectious Disease Act followed, three years of COVID crisis has negatively affected learning courses provided in-person in general, not just foreign language classes.
