Educational Services Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2026
The Market for Educational Services (Total of Major 15 Categories) Reached 2.7805 Trillion Yen in FY2025, a 0.5% Increase from the Previous Fiscal Year
Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) conducted a survey of Japan’s educational service market (total of major fifteen categories). The survey revealed the trends by service category, trends among market players, and outlook.
Market Overview
Based on business sales, the educational services market, which comprises a total of 15 major segments, increased by 0.5% from the previous fiscal year, reaching 2.87051 trillion yen in FY2024. The following six segments showed growth: exams for qualifications and certifications, language schools and courses, physical education for preschoolers, corporate business training services, e-learning and digital education, and study guides and workbooks. As with last year, corporate business training services notably contributed to overall market expansion. The e-learning and digital education segment showed an upturn, marking growth for the first time in three years. This growth was driven by robust corporate demand (B2B) stemming from strategic investments in digital transformation, as well as growing demand from individuals for language and qualification-related courses. Meanwhile, many segments struggled due to a declining child population and other factors. Despite being underpinned by demand for junior high entrance exams and tuition hikes, the largest market segment, comprising cram schools and university preparatory schools, performed sluggishly in local areas. Correspondence course segments, including those for preschoolers, students, and adults, failed to escape stagnant performance.

The Delisting of Major Educational Service Providers Represents Dramatic Market Changes and Is Leading to Accelerated Restructuring for Survival
More companies in the education industry are choosing to delist in order to increase mobility and freedom in business management, as well as to promote fundamental structural reform.
Amid dramatic changes in educational settings, including a rapid decrease in the child population, and a shorter cram school attendance due to established within-the-year university entrance exams (comprehensive and school-recommended selections), as well as inflated investments in educational digital transformation, major companies are determined to restructure their group members and consolidate businesses in the medium to long term and shift to corporate training, regardless of stock market evaluations. The industry is reaching a milestone that could impact the competitive landscape and future competitive environment, as evidenced by agile management decisions and accelerated alignment and restructuring for the survival of major companies.
Future Outlook
In FY2026, the overall educational service market is expected to reach 2.88216 trillion yen, which is a 0.4% increase from the previous fiscal year. Five market segments are expected to show year-over-year growth: exams for qualifications and certifications, physical education for preschoolers, corporate business training services, e-learning and digital education, and study guides and workbooks. The language schools and courses segment is expected to level off. The corporate business training services segment continues to be the overall growth driver.
