Transition & Forecast of Uniform Rental Service Market Size
Transition & Forecast of Uniform Rental Service Market Size

Market Overview

The uniform rental service market size in FY2023 was 92,500 million yen, up by 1.4% from the previous fiscal year, based on the sales of uniform rental companies. The growth attributed to the rapid recovery of economic activities, driven by the downgrading of the COVID-19 to Class 5 infectious disease in May 2023 that stimulated foreigners to visit Japan and revitalized tourism industry.

Market conditions of uniform rental services were generally favorable until FY2019, underpinned by the demand rise associated with the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, and the increase of inbound tourists. However, in FY2020, the market growth was restrained by the outbreak of COVID-19, which induced the store/facility closures, the collapse in inbound tourist numbers, and the spread of work-from-home practices. Although restrictions on activities were eased in FY2021, the market continued to dwindle due to the recession. Nonetheless, with revitalization of economic activities from FY2022, the market has been indicating recovery trend.

Future Outlook

The uniform rental service market size for FY2024 is forecasted to rise by 1.6% from the preceding fiscal year to 94,000 million yen and shrink by 0.5% on the same basis to 93,500 million yen for FY2025.

Growth momentum in FY2023 is likely to continue in FY2024. We believe that an increase in sales due to price hikes and other factors will affect the expansion of the market size. However, going into FY2025, the momentum may slow down, resulting the market size to level off or decline marginally. A disruptive factor behind the decline is the trend of questioning the necessity of uniforms. While there was a constant recovery in the demand for uniform rentals after the reclassification of COVID-19’s legal status to Class 5 disease, some companies became more scrupulous than others about cost. There are instances where they seek cost reduction through reassessment of the usage and necessity of uniforms. Such trend is identified especially among those embarking on achieving automation and labor saving.

Instead of exceeding the pre-pandemic levels, the market size of uniform rental services is projected to wane hereafter.
