Domestic Space Construction Market Forecasted to Reach 150.2 Billion Yen for FY2023

While initiatives in space industry to shifting from state-sponsored projects to private-sector-led, especially in Europe and in the US., the JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) is playing a central role in making efforts for development in the domestic space industry.

The demands relative to space development include space stations, ground facilities, and infrastructure on the Moon and Mars, which includes habitats/shelters and power generation facilities, etc. The market size is forecasted to reach 150.2 billion yen for FY2030. Nevertheless, in consideration of the demand for rockets (launch vehicles), satellites, various types of electronic devices, software, satellite communication, satellite broadcasting, and satellite remote sensing, the market size of space industry as a whole is projected to total to 1,591.6 billion yen for FY2030.

At present, most of the domestic companies in space industry take part in consortium for their research, development, manufacturing, and operation. Instead of doing all by themselves, they collaborate with JAXA, local governments, private companies, research institutions, and universities.  

Major domestic construction companies in space business include Shimizu Corporation, Takenaka Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Obayashi Corporation, Tokyu Construction and Kumagai Gumi. Manufacturers assisting space construction include Komatsu, Toyota, Honda, Bridgestone, and Giken.
