Robotic Care Device Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2022

Robotic Care Device Market in the Next Stage for Widespread

Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) carried out a survey on the domestic robotic care device market, and found out the trends by product segment, the trends of market players, and the future outlook.

Market Overview

This research targets those robotic care devices with the functions of transfer support (wearable, unwearable), mobility assistance (outdoor, indoor), toileting aid (to use at living room or for forecasting), bathing support to assist in and out of a bathtub, watching support (at a facility or at home), etc., intended to be used on site for long-term care. MHLW and METI have established the priority areas in order to achieve both the maintenance and improvement of livelihood qualities of older people through self-reliance aids and alleviation of burdens on such caregivers, and have continued supporting the product development.

The robotic care device market for FY2021 rose by 12.1% from the previous fiscal year to 2,175 million yen, based on the shipment values at manufacturers. Due to the influence of new coronaviruses, staying indoors continued, which led home-use wrap-up portable toilets, facility-use toileting forecasting robotic systems have sold well.

Noteworthy Topics

Market Expansion Expected for Applications of New Products and New Functions

The conditions and possibilities of market expansion for robotic care devices differ by application, and those companies entering the market differ by each application and type. Few companies are able to cover whole categories. New products and functions that have reflected the user demand are expected to expand the market in respective application fields already launched. On the other hand, applications such as transfer support used for outdoors and bathing support have few suggestions for functional improvement, making it less expected for market expansion in the extension of the current functions.

Currently, there are many applications that depend on the evaluation of new products that have been introduced, so that there may still be room for robotic care systems to explore demands through new suggestions.

Future Outlook

In the applications of transfer support, toileting aid, and watching assistance, new products and new suggestions by new entries are observed, which have led to reviewing of new functions, user-friendliness, and prices. After FY2023, those new products of robotic care systems with the functions and prices having reflected user demands are likely to drive the market to expand the market size of robotic care systems to 3,625 million yen by FY2025. While some products are still in the process of being evaluated for new functions, gradual introduction is expected to move the entire market one step higher to widespread.

Research Outline

1.Research Period: May to September 2022
2.Research Object: Domestic manufacturers and suppliers of robotic care devices, companies dealing in applied systems, companies and concerned organizations developing robotic care devices, and the government agencies
3.Research Methogology: Face-to-face interviews (including online) by specialized researchers, surveys via telephone & emails, and literature research

What are Robotic Care Devices?

The robotic care devices in this research refer to those robotic devices that support caregivers/care workers or receivers of long-term or nursing care services aiming at alleviating physical and mental burdens of such caregivers and receivers and providing efficiency.

This research intends to include only those robotic devices suggested and requested to use essentially for long-term or nursing care only, although it is sometimes difficult to distinguish from those that are not, because there are some cases of medical robots and robotic devices commercialized for medical treatment, rehabilitations, independence of the patients, or for industrial purposes.
