In a world of continued global inflation and political unrest, motorbikes have been reappraised for their flexibility and low total cost of ownership (TCO), as a means of personal mobility. Reevaluated as a mobility for common people, motorbike sales robustly increased to reach 59.9 million units in 2024. In India, the largest market, sales grew 11.5% year over year due to increased demand in rural regions and accelerated government spending, including for the PM Gati Shakti initiative, which drove the global market. Many ASEAN countries also experienced robust economic growth due to recovering export and domestic demand, achieving positive year-over-year growth, with the exception of Thailand.
Nevertheless, momentum to electrify motorbikes has waned. This is because electric motorbikes have become less price-competitive due to the reduction or the elimination of subsidies in Europe and Taiwan. India experienced subsidy fraud by some manufacturers, as well as a resurgence of concerns about battery safety. The resale price issue of electric motorbikes is also beginning to be recognized throughout the region, including ASEAN. These factors have also prevented the acceptance of electric motorbikes in price-sensitive Asia. This marks a clear turning point from the "electrification will save the day" period of the early 2020s.
This report provides an overview of the motorbike market from various perspectives, including vehicle-electricity separation, component technologies, and market player trends.
