High-performance Separation Membrane

Research Target:

CO2 separation membrane, hydrogen separation membrane

Research Content:

Membrane separation technologies come in various types depending on the materials used and pore sizes, and are applied across a wide range of fields, including water treatment, food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, petroleum, and steel. In recent years, research and development have particularly accelerated in CO2 separation membranes, which contribute to improving the economics of carbon recycling and CCS/CCU, and hydrogen separation membranes, which are used for the separation and purification of hydrogen, a carbon-free energy source.

The Carbon Recycling Roadmap published in June 2023 sets targets for the cost of CO2 separation and capture at around 2,000yen/t-CO2 for low-pressure gas and around 1,000yen/t-CO2 for high-pressure gas by 2030, and emphasizes the promotion of technological innovations to achieve these targets. Membrane separation using CO2 separation membranes is positioned as a technology applicable to both low-pressure and high-pressure gas separation and recovery, highlighting its potential as a new growth technology.

In the hydrogen energy sector, the utilization of hydrogen has become increasingly realistic following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prompting countries worldwide to formulate hydrogen strategies, advance related regulations, and expand public-private investments in research and development. Hydrogen separation membranes are recognized as technologies that contribute to the adoption of green hydrogen, CO2 reduction, and energy independence, and are therefore targets for policy support and international cooperation.

This report focuses on CO2 separation membranes and hydrogen separation membranes, analyzing market trends by material and application, R&D trends, and the business strategies of companies entering these fields.
