Yano Research Institute has been publishing a white paper on leisure industry for 33 years. With the lifestyle changes and shift in Japanese people’s perception for taking time off over the years, the leisure industry has increased significance, taking root in people’s lives. While industries that once underpinned the rapid growth of Japanese economy, such as manufacturing, reach maturity, leisure industry (tourism, amusement, culture) has grown rapidly as one of the major drivers of Japanese economy.
Nevertheless, the industry is still in turbulence. The more the public demand diversifies, the faster the pace of unattractive or unreasonable services become obsolete. While the industry is still in the process of recovering from the catastrophic impact of COVID-19 crisis, leisure businesses are faced with the era of intense ‘selection’ by consumers.
The Leisure Industry 2023 aims to provide a comprehensive view of the leisure industry by exploring the state of leisure industry by category, how they are adapting to the changes of time and growing with the trend.
